As Queenslanders, we are blessed with fantastic weather almost all year round. As a result, the outdoor pergola has become an essential feature of the Queensland home. One of the most popular questions we get asked from our customers is what pergola design will work best for my home. The answer isn’t always easy. The right pergola design comes down to how you hope to use it, it’s positioning on the property, and what style will suit the design of your home. Luckily there is a range of pergola designs to suit any home. Read on for our list of the most common pergola designs and some handy tips on choosing the right one for you.

What is a pergola?

A pergola is an outdoor structure that can serve multiple purposes. For example, it can be a garden feature or provide a functional outdoor space for entertainment.

Pergolas can be constructed in various materials and designs. And it can be either connected to the home or free-standing. The traditional material of choice has been hardwood or timber, providing a natural look and feel. However, as both require regular maintenance and upkeep to protect them from the elements, more sturdy materials such as metal and aluminium have grown popular. These materials are resistant to rust, can be constructed quickly, and provide a modern look with a great range of colour options to suit the home.

The ‘Outdoor Room’ Pergola:

By far one of our most popular options with our customers is the outdoor room. This style of pergola will act as an extension to your home and bring the ‘inside out’. The outdoor room provides a comfortable space for your family to relax and enjoy the great outdoors all year round.

The outdoor room pergolas are commonly built with a fixed roof. This makes it appear as an extension to the house while allowing better lighting, outdoor heating, or fans in the ceiling. Common requests for outdoor rooms include TV and sound system set-ups and outdoor kitchen and bar areas. Outdoor rooms may also have privacy screens or sliding doors to warm during the cooler months.

The Louvered or Retractable Pergola:

Louvered or retractable pergolas are a popular option for those who like to enjoy the outdoors all year round. They can control the amount of light and shade at a touch of a button. As a result, homeowners can enjoy the sun in winter and stay cool in summer – at the flick of a switch.

A louvered or retractable pergola is commonly attached to the side of the house. While there is a range of different options, Colourbond remains a popular choice for homeowners. This is due in large part to their durability, easy maintenance, and premium look. Popular colours include cool creams, bright whites, and dark navy and black.

Traditional Garden Pergola:

The traditional garden pergola design has been around for many years. The garden pergola generally provides minimal shade and is designed as a feature within the garden. The garden pergola is made from timber to blend into its natural surroundings. And it can be positioned over walkways or placed in key focal points of the garden.

Garden pergolas present an excellent place for garden lovers to add a beautiful and functional space with hanging plants and climbing vines. And the addition of hanging lights can make for a stunning setting for a romantic meal on a warm summer night.

Poolside Pergola:

Having a shady and comfortable space is desirable for those lucky enough to have a pool. The addition of a pergola to a poolside area can transition the space into a luxurious, resort-style backyard pool while providing a functional space for extra shade.

Poolside pergolas can be designed alongside the pool to create a luxurious lounging area. Or they can be built to house a spa or provide extra shade to one side of the pool.

How do I know what option is right for me?

The great thing about pergolas is that there are many options to make the perfect pergola design that is right for your needs. However, there are always things to consider, such as budget, space, and council regulations. Therefore, engaging an expert like Daklen Building Group can help you make the right choices within your budget while navigating any tricky council requirements.

Daklen CEO Mark Passfield recommends writing a list of what you want before speaking to an expert. ‘It’s good to agree as a family what you want out of your outdoor space. For example, will you be using it all year round? What do you think you will use it most for? What furniture and accessories need to fit in the space? Answering these questions up front can help ensure the result is a space that you will love for years to come.’

If you are interested in building a pergola, we would love to help you. At Daklen Building Group we have deep experience over the last 20 years installing various pergolas in the Queensland home. And as a business built on trust and care, we will help you find the right solution for your home that we know you will love.
