Severe weather events can cause severe damage to your home and outbuildings. But we can all help to get our homes storm-ready to protect your home and prevent costly damage. Doing a few simple things around the house will ensure you are storm-ready when big storms hit your home. Check out our handy home maintenance check list below.

Outside the Home:
  • Regularly clean gutters of leaves and debris.
  • Regularly check the condition of your roof. Don’t wait to make repairs that you note.
  • Remove overhanging branches and trees.
  • Secure any items that may become ‘flying objects’ in windy weather. This includes garden furniture, children’s toys and equipment (trampolines, sandpits etc), and any other items ‘you haven’t found a home for yet.
  • Where possible, lift items off the ground if flooding is likely to occur.
Inside the Home:
  • Make it a practice to close windows and doors securely whenever you leave the house.
  • Check your electronic goods are plugged into surge protectors and disconnect any appliances that are not required to be on all the time. (Yes, that could mean the digital set-top box)
  • Move items away from any doors that might get water underneath (i.e., garage doors).
  • Elevate any items that may be in areas that might have flooding.
Paperwork and Records:

Are you and your family prepared to weather the storm? Every year the Queensland storms seem to intensify, causing more and more damage in their wake. So every year, the Queensland Government urges people to plan and prepare for these extreme weather events to ensure people, pets, and homes stay safe.  Has your family made a plan this year? If not, here are some valuable resources to help you plan.

  • Visit the Queensland Government’s Get Ready Queensland website. Fill out and save the household emergency and evacuation plan today.
  • Make sure you have a well-stocked emergency kit close at hand. For what to include, check out this handy checklist here
  • Double-check your house and car insurance – are you fully covered in storm events? Have details of the insurance policy and phone number to process a claim printed in hardcopy format.
  • Microchip your pets so they can be found and returned to you if they should run away during a storm.
Prepare Your Storm-Ready Evacuation Plan and Practice:

You never know what a storm may bring, so having your plan in place could be a crucial step for safety. Make sure you practice the plan with all family members to ensure you get out in 15 seconds. Here are some top tips:

  • Check your smoke alarms – check that all smoke alarms are in a working condition, replace if necessary, add new alarms if you think your home needs them.
  • Check your escape options – create an escape plan for the home. It should include escape options for each room and consider the needs and abilities of the room’s occupants (i.e., young children, disabled adults, and the elderly).
  • Check that your plan works – practice your plan with a timer to see how long it takes. Adjust where necessary. Make it a regular ‘fun game experience’ for smaller children so that it is a learned response.
  • Check your emergency kit – what do you need to take with you in the event of an emergency? Is there a space by the door you can place an emergency kit? i.e., spare phone, copies of essential documents.
