A fire in any property is a catastrophic event that profoundly impacts the insured/occupier. It is emotionally distressing, not to mention the physical injuries which may occur. For many, the aftermath of dealing with a home fire can be overwhelming. The challenge of evacuation, relocation, and rebuilding after a fire is great, especially when dealing with personal property loss. In the middle of a crisis, it is vital to have great insurance builders who understand what the owner/occupier is going through. Good insurance builders will be empathetic and take the pressure off. They will also set clear expectations and quickly get on with the job of rebuilding what was lost.
At Daklen Building Group, we have seen and repaired many homes in various stages of fire damage. We work with insurance companies and loss adjusters to ensure a property is restored to standard and high quality while caring for the owner’s needs. Our process takes the stress out of fire reinstatement, as evidenced by the tricky restoration of this historic Queensland cottage ravaged by fire.
A historic Queensland home ravaged by fire
On the 9th of August 2016, a fire ripped through one of the historic West End Cottages at West End, Queensland. The fire caused catastrophic damage to the two-story townhouse, causing thousands of dollars of damage. The townhouse itself was also part of a gated complex. Therefore it was fortunate that no other properties were set alight during the fire, and no one was hurt.
Daklen Building Group were first on the scene the next day
Axis Underwriting Service engaged Daklen via Crawfords Loss Adjusting to conduct an initial make safe and remove the damaged sections and content. After the fire investigators completed their investigations the next day, we were the first on-site. As the townhouse was part of a gated complex, we focused on making the area safe and reassuring other residents that we were on the scene.
We disconnected all the electrical and removed any hazardous debris that could cause further collapse. Next, we removed the burnt materials to eliminate the smell that was seeping throughout the complex. Once we made the property safe, we introduced ourselves to the neighbours. We offered them a direct contact at Daklen if they had any concerns with the upcoming repairs.
A high-quality reinstatement done right
The rebuild of the West End Cottage was never going to be an easy one. The insured had recently renovated the cottage to include some original historic features. Understandably, the insured was keen to have the property restored to its original form. And he was particular about specific fittings and finishes.
We worked with Crawfords Loss Adjusting to develop a scope of work and quote in conjunction with the insured’s specifications of the fixtures and fittings. These included sourcing and quoting non-standard fittings such as marble bathrooms, VJ wall linings. We were also required to source high-end fittings and specific lighting from overseas.
Once awarded the contract, we were able to rebuild and restore the cottage to its original form. The insured was very involved during the process, which made things tricky due to the fact he resided overseas. However, we restored the property on time, and the insured was thrilled with the result.
How Daklen Insurance Builders made a tricky job easy
We pride ourselves on being professional and reliable insurance builders. We have decades of experience managing these types of projects, and we bring that experience to every job.
This job was tricky, and the insured had high expectations and wanted to be involved while living overseas. In this instance, we made the job an easy one by our:
- Prompt and professional response: At Daklen we have an emergency contact available 24/7. And we pride ourselves on being available to jump on any scene at short notice. The Daklen building team were first on the scene within 24 hours. The team conducted a make-safe rapidly to secure the property and the safety of others.
- Excellent communication: It is essential for us that we build trust from the start of the project. That is why our process includes ensuring that both our clients and the insured are regularly updated. For the insured, this was tricky due to the distance. So we would conduct regular video conferences and share image and video updates.
- An unfailing commitment to quality: We knew that the insured had particular requirements and expected a high-quality rebuild. The insured was a lighting engineer for a major global construction company and wanted to be heavily involved in selecting lighting and fixtures. Therefore we cut no corners and maintained that same standard of perfection that he delivered in his original renovation.
